Dubna. JINR. Dubna Museum.
On the 11th of July, we went to the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research (JINR)which is in Dubna. We were all wearing the T-shirts, which we had received from JINR as a present at the welcome party.

We met up at the JINR museum for a tour there where we learned about the history, the famous scientists at JINR and the work that is done there. We also learned a lot about dubnium (element 105 on the periodic table) because it was discovered in and named after Dubna, which was cool to learn about as Dubna is the only city that has an element named after itself (at this time).

Then we saw an exhibition that was set up to commemorate the 50th anniversary of JINR, which was this year. After we had looked at the exhibition, we walked to the JINR facility, which was located only a few blocks away from the museum. There we toured one of the smaller labs of the facility, which works with nuclear power. Our guide showed us some of the generators and accelerators and explained what each one of them does. It was very interesting for me since I learned a lot about chemistry, which is one of my favorite subjects.

We also ate at the cafeteria at JINR where we were all entertained by reading my Russian phrasebook (it was a bit vulgar so I won’t include any of the words that we learned but funny nonetheless). Afterwards, we left JINR and went to the Dubna museum.

The Dubna museum contained many displays on the history of Dubna, which taught us a lot about Dubna. We saw many things from thousands of years BC through the fall of communism in Russia. I enjoyed learning about Dubna’s history a lot. I liked that day a lot since I learned many interesting things about Dubna.
